This Guide contains essential information on the recertification process, including the requirements for recertification, the deadline for submitting recertification documentation, and guidelines on how to enter your professional development hours.
To ensure that you understand the recertification process thoroughly, it is recommended that you also review the CEBE™, CEQA™, and CBPA™ Recertification Process document for detailed instructions on how to enter your professional development hours.
2.0 BEX® Guide Overview
The BEX® Guide serves as a comprehensive collection of knowledge within the field of business excellence and embodies the most current accepted practices. This guide is crafted and refined by business excellence professionals who use it regularly in their work. It covers the areas of knowledge that are essential for business excellence, including the associated activities, tasks, and skills necessary for their effective execution.
Given that business excellence is constantly evolving, the BEX® Guide must keep pace with these changes. Each new release is considered a step forward toward a complete body of knowledge. The guide is updated regularly based on feedback and changes in widely accepted practices. However, only proven, generally accepted, and widely applied information is included in the BEX® Guide.
The BEX® Guide is an authoritative reference for professional knowledge in business excellence, and it serves as the foundation for the CEBE™, CEQA™, and CBPA™ certifications. It consists of seven knowledge areas of the African Excellence Model plus 12 underlying core concept areas and 94 competencies. For more detailed information about the BEX® Guide, visit the BEX® GUIDE section of our website.
3.1 Program Overview
Individuals who have earned the prestigious CEBE™, CEQA™, and CBPA™ designations are required to maintain their certification by demonstrating an ongoing professional commitment to the business excellence profession and satisfying the Recertification program requirements.
The Recertification program serves two crucial purposes. Firstly, it ensures that the Business Excellence Professional keeps up with the changes in the profession, and secondly, it ensures that they contribute to the profession.
The Recertification program is designed to support the ongoing professional development of individuals who have earned their CEBE™, CEQA™, and CBPA™ designations. Its main objectives are to encourage recipients' continuous professional development, promote individualized learning, recognize the efforts of recipients to give back to the profession, offer a standard and objective mechanism for recording professional development activities, and sustain the global recognition and value of the designations.
To satisfy the recertification requirements and maintain certification, recipients must earn and report a minimum of 60 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) during each three-year cycle in their BEX® Development Log. CEUs are awarded for a wide range of professional development activities such as attending conferences, workshops, webinars, and other training programs that align with the BEX® Guide v1.0.
The Recertification program ensures that recipients stay current with the latest advancements in the business excellence profession while actively contributing to its growth and development.
3.2 Confidentiality of Information
At BEX®, we respect the privacy of our recipients and maintain the confidentiality of their recertification application information and related materials. This information will not be disclosed to anyone other than the recipient without their consent.
However, if a third party, such as a sponsor, has paid for the recipient’s recertification application fee, the recipient authorizes and directs BEX® to release Confidential Results Information to that sponsor.
It is important to note that any violation of BEX®’s Confidentiality Policy will result in disciplinary action(s) as outlined in the BEX® Constitution.
3.0 ABOUT RECERTIFICATION
4.0 RECERTIFICATION PROCESS
4.1 Responsibility of the Recipient
Each recipient is responsible for maintaining their certification by being aware of their recertification date and ensuring they meet all recertification requirements on time. Failure to do so may result in loss of certification.
Email reminders will be sent to all recipients as a courtesy, but it is ultimately the recipient's responsibility to keep track of their own recertification date. It is important to keep the primary email address on file with BEX® up to date to ensure timely and accurate communication.
It is important to note that BEX® email communications may inadvertently be blocked or filtered into spam folders. Recipients are advised to add certification@bex.org to their personal address book to help ensure that important Recertification program messages from BEX® and specifically from the Certification team are received.
Recipients who wish to opt out of receiving BEX® emails should do so through their email settings or by contacting BEX® directly. However, opting out may result in missing important information regarding recertification requirements and other program updates.
4.2 Determining Your Recertification Date
The recertification period for a CEBE™, CEQA™, or CBPA™ certification is three years, which starts from the date when the certification examination was passed. For instance, if someone passes their certification exam on March 1, 2023, their certification expiration date will be March 1, 2026. This means that the individual must fulfill all the recertification requirements before March 1, 2026, to maintain their certification status.
It is important for recipients to keep track of their recertification date and to make sure they submit their recertification application before the deadline. To avoid last-minute complications or errors, recipients are encouraged to plan their recertification activities in advance and keep up-to-date records of their professional development activities.
Recipients can check their recertification status and due date by logging into their BEX® account and reviewing their certification information. They should ensure that their contact information, especially their email address, is accurate and up to date to receive important reminders and notifications related to their recertification.
4.2.1 Certified Status
Recipients who complete their recertification requirements before their certification expiration date will maintain their certified status for the next three years and will be included in the Certification Registry, which is available to the public on the BEX® website. This registry serves as a way for individuals and organizations to verify a recipient's certification status.
As part of the online certification and recertification processes, recipients agree to being listed in the registry. It is important to note that being on the registry is optional, and recipients have the option to opt-out of being listed by contacting the BEX® Certification team. However, it is recommended that recipients choose to be listed as it adds to their professional credibility and demonstrates their ongoing commitment to the business excellence profession.
4.2.2 Uncertified Status
Recipients who fail to meet the recertification requirements within the allotted time frame will become uncertified. However, they may have the opportunity to reinstate their certification depending on the length of time they have been uncertified. For more information on reinstating a certification, recipients can contact the certification team at certification@bex.org.
It is important to note that the reinstatement process may involve meeting certain requirements, such as completing additional professional development activities, and paying any applicable fees. The certification team will provide recipients with detailed information on the reinstatement process and what is required of them to regain their certified status.
It is recommended that recipients who are at risk of becoming uncertified due to missed recertification deadlines, or other reasons, reach out to the certification team as soon as possible to discuss their options and potential next steps.
4.3 Fee Payment & Submission
Recertification is an essential process for all CEBE™, CEQA™, and CBPA™ certification holders, which is done online via the BEX® website. To maintain certification status, recipients must complete the recertification process before their certification expiration date. The process involves the submission of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and payment of the recertification fee, which is non-refundable.
Payment of the recertification fee can be made through various methods, including credit card, money transfer, or cheque. If the payment is made by cheque or money order, it should be payable to "BEX®," and the payment should be mailed to the address provided on the Contact webpage.
Upon submitting and paying for recertification, the recipient will receive an email stating whether their recertification is approved or approved pending audit. If the recipient is approved, their certification status is renewed, and their next recertification date is three years from their current recertification date. However, if the recipient is selected for an audit, the audit process as described in section 7.0 of the Guide will begin.
If the recertification application is declined for any reason, the recipient will be notified via email. It is important to note that BEX® reserves the right to revoke or suspend a certification if a recipient fails to meet the recertification requirements.
To ensure timely and successful recertification, it is the responsibility of the recipient to keep their contact information up to date, including their primary email address with BEX®. It is also important to note that email communications from BEX® may be inadvertently blocked or forwarded to bulk mail folders by some spam filters. Therefore, recipients should add certification@bex.org to their personal address book to ensure important Recertification program messages from BEX® are received.
The Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is the measuring unit used to quantify approved learning and professional service activities required for recertification of the CEBE™, CEQA™, and CBPA™ certifications. The purpose of the CEU is to provide a uniform standard of measurement for recognizing and recording professional development activities.
One CEU is usually earned for every hour spent in a planned, structured learning experience or professional activity, with some exceptions. It is important to note that not all activities are eligible for CEUs, and it is the responsibility of the recipient to determine whether an activity meets the requirements for CEUs.
For activities that do meet the requirements, the amount of CEUs awarded is determined by the duration and nature of the activity. For example, attending a one-hour webinar or workshop would typically earn one CEU. However, fractions of CEUs may also be reported in quarter (¼) hour increments, allowing for more precise measurement of professional development activities.
It is important to accurately report the number of CEUs earned for each activity to ensure compliance with recertification requirements. Recipients should keep records of all activities and the corresponding CEUs earned to facilitate the recertification process.
5.1 Online CEU Reporting in the BEX® Development Log
For detailed instructions on how to enter your earned CEUs, refer to the CEBE™, CEQA™, and CBPA™ Recertification Process document available for download. The BEX® Development Log is an online tool that allows recipients to track their earned CEUs throughout their three-year recertification cycle. It's important to note that entries made in the log for a specific activity cannot be modified after seven days.
While there are no minimum requirements for CEUs earned in specific categories, recipients should be aware of the maximum values that may be earned in a single category. Recipients have the flexibility to earn their CEUs in any combination of categories, but they must earn CEUs in more than one category. It's also essential to note that activities completed before obtaining the certification will not be accepted towards the recertification requirements.
Recipients must report their qualifying activities, and they can only claim participation in a specific course/activity once and cannot claim it in more than one category. It is the recipient's responsibility to ensure that they have earned the required number of CEUs and reported them before their recertification date.
5.2 Maintaining Supporting Documentation
It is important for recipients to maintain proper documentation for each activity they claim in their BEX® Development Log. This documentation should include copies of their submission and all necessary supporting documentation, as outlined in Section 7.0 of the Recertification Guide, which covers Audits and Audit Documentation. It is important to note that a percentage of recipients will be randomly selected for audit, which is why it is imperative to maintain proper documentation for all CEU claims.
Recipients are advised to keep their documentation for 12 months after the three-year cycle has ended. This will ensure that they have the necessary documentation in case they are audited. It is essential to keep in mind that the burden of proof is on the recipient to demonstrate that their CEU activities are legitimate and meet the requirements for recertification.
By keeping accurate and detailed documentation, recipients can ensure that their recertification process goes smoothly and that they maintain their certification status. The BEX® Development Log provides a convenient tool for tracking CEUs, but recipients must ensure they have the necessary documentation to back up their claims.
5.3 Transferring CEUs
Recipients who accumulate more than 60 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) within their three-year cycle have the opportunity to transfer up to 20 of their excess CEUs to the following cycle. This is an automated process carried out by the system, and only applies to CEUs earned during the third year of the cycle.
For instance, if a recipient's cycle ends on March 31, 2022, any excess CEUs earned during 2022 will be transferred to the next three-year cycle beginning on April 1, 2023. It is important to note that to carry over the excess CEUs to the next cycle, they must be recorded in the BEX® Development Log before the recertification is due. If the hours are not logged before the recertification deadline, they will not carry over.
5.0 CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS (CEUs)
The CEBE™, CEQA™, and CBPA™ Recertification Program has six CEU Qualifying Activity Categories. These categories include Professional Development, Work History (Professional Experience), Professional Activities, Volunteer Service, Self-Directed Learning, and Formal Academic Education. Each category has a maximum value of CEUs that a recipient can earn within a three-year cycle.
Category 1: Professional Development (Maximum 30 CEUs)
Professional Development activities include Classroom Course (courses, seminars, workshops), Chapter Event (meetings, events), Chapter Study Group, Conference Workshop (keynotes, tracks, workshops), and Online Course (courses, live webinars). A recipient can earn a maximum of 30 CEUs in this category.
1. Classroom Course (courses, seminars, workshops)
One hour of classroom/contact time equals one CEU. Fractions of CEUs may be reported in quarter (¼) hour increments. The CEBE™, CEQA™, and CBPA™ Recertification Process document provides detailed instructions on how to enter these hours into a recipient's BEX® Development Log.
BEX® Learning Network Endorsed Providers (LNEP) provides courses that align with the BEX® Guide and satisfy the CEU requirements for maintaining certification. BEX® endorses education providers and their courses that meet the criteria. These courses have already been assessed to ensure they meet the professional development criteria. These courses can be found in the Education and Training Providers section of the BEX® website. Professional development activities taken through an EEP automatically qualify in this category.
CEUs can also be earned by attending classroom educational programs offered by other education providers. The course or subject matter must be directly related to business excellence, moderated or facilitated like a formal course, have measurable learning objectives directly applicable to business excellence, and have an opportunity for participants to interact with the material and practice the task or objective being presented. The CEU value submitted by the recipient will be validated by BEX® at the time of recertification since the course is not endorsed by BEX® as part of the EEP program.
2. BEX® Chapter Event (meetings, events)
BEX® Chapters are local groups authorized by BEX® to hold events, meetings, and study groups in their area. These events are typically organized and led by members of the local chapter, but they may also feature guest speakers or facilitators.
BEX® Chapter events can provide a valuable opportunity for recipients to network with other professionals in their field and learn about new developments in business excellence. They may also offer practical advice and tips for implementing business excellence practices in the workplace.
CEUs can be earned for attending BEX® Chapter events, with one CEU awarded per contact hour. To receive credit, recipients must attend the full duration of the event and sign in to indicate their attendance. It is the responsibility of the recipient to request a receipt from the chapter which will indicate the number of CEUs allocated to the event and prove their attendance at the event.
Chapters are required to keep a record of attendance for their events and meetings for at least the previous three years, in case of a BEX® audit. However, it is not mandatory for chapters to issue proof of attendance to attendees, though some may choose to do so.
6.0 CEU QUALIFYING ACTIVITY CATEGORIES
Category 2: WORK HISTORY (Professional Experience) (Max. 25 CEUs)
This category recognizes the importance of practical work experience in business excellence, and the CEUs in this category are awarded based on the number of hours of relevant work experience. To qualify for this category, the work experience must be aligned with the BEX® Guide, which serves as a standard for business excellence practices.
-
Recipients can earn up to 25 CEUs for their work experience in the field. The CEUs earned in this category are validated by the BEX® certification team during the recertification process. To ensure that the work experience is aligned with the BEX® Guide, recipients must provide details of their work experience and how it relates to the principles and practices outlined in the Guide.
-
Recipients can earn 5 CEUs for every 1000 hours of work experience in business excellence. For example, 5000 hours of relevant work experience would qualify for 25 CEUs. The work experience must have been completed within the current three-year cycle.
-
It is important to note that the work history category cannot be used to satisfy the entire CEU requirement for recertification. Recipients must earn CEUs in at least one other category.
Category 3: PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES (Max. 30 CEUs)
Recipients can earn up to 30 CEUs by participating in various professional activities listed under sub-categories A to F.
Sub-Category A:
Author or co-author of a business excellence article published in a refereed journal. Recipients can earn 30 CEUs per article for writing or co-authoring a business excellence article that is published in a refereed journal. The article must be substantially aligned with the BEX® Guide. A refereed journal is one in which the manuscript is reviewed by experts in the field before publication.
Sub-Category B:
Author or co-author of a business excellence article published in a non-refereed journal.
Recipients can earn 15 CEUs per article for writing or co-authoring a business excellence article that is published in a non-refereed journal. The article must be substantially aligned with the BEX® Guide.
Sub-Category C:
Speaker/Instructor on business excellence at a conference, symposium, workshop, formal course or BEX® chapter meeting. Recipients can earn 10 CEUs per activity for being a speaker or instructor on business excellence at a conference, symposium, workshop, formal course or BEX® chapter meeting.
Sub-Category D:
Member/Moderator of panel discussion on business excellence at a conference, symposium, workshop, or formal course. Recipients can earn 5 CEUs per activity for being a member or moderator of a panel discussion on business excellence at a conference, symposium, workshop or formal course.
Sub-Category E:
Author or co-author of a business excellence textbook. Recipients can earn 30 CEUs for writing or co-authoring a business excellence textbook.
Sub-Category F:
Developer of content for a structured business excellence learning program. Recipients can earn 15 CEUs per program for developing content for a structured business excellence learning program. A structured program would include learning objectives, interactivity and assessment to ensure that learning has taken place. This could include content used for classroom delivery, online instructor-led delivery, or online self-paced delivery.
For article writing in categories A and B, the article must be substantially aligned with the BEX® Guide, but there will not be a strict minimum or maximum length defined. The article may be published in a paper-based or electronic format, but the publisher must be different from the author and review the article content prior to publication. However, sub-category A articles are refereed journals by definition and do not require review/editor provision. This provision is specifically intended to avoid granting any CEU credit
Category 4: VOLUNTEER SERVICE (Max. 30 CEUs)
Volunteer service is a vital aspect of professional development that can contribute to the growth of the business excellence profession. Recipients can earn CEUs in this category by giving back to the profession through volunteer service to a professional or community organization. This can include volunteer service to BEX® or an BEX® Chapter, working in person, or remotely in a committee or working group. Additionally, this category includes contributing expertise through a formal BEX®-led initiative or survey that awards CEUs for participation.
1. Volunteer service to BEX®:
Recipients can earn CEUs in this sub-category by serving as a board member or committee member for BEX® or BEX® Chapter. One hour of service qualifies for one CEU, and a bonus of 10 CEUs per anniversary year is earned for a minimum of six months of participation per year. The recipient is required to attend a minimum of 50% of the scheduled meetings during the submitted time to earn and claim the CEU value credit. However, the requirement may be waived by BEX® if deemed appropriate due to unusual circumstances.
2. Volunteer service to a non-employer community or charitable group:
Recipients can earn CEUs in this sub-category by volunteering their business excellence services to a legally recognized not-for-profit organization. Volunteer business excellence services must consist of activities aligned with the BEX® Guide, and one hour of service qualifies for one CEU.
3. Documentation:
It is important to note that volunteer service activities must be documented, and supporting documentation must be maintained for 12 months after the three-year cycle has ended. This is to ensure that a percentage of recipients can be randomly selected for audit, and their documentation can be verified.
Category 5: SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING (Max.15 CEUs)
Category 5 of the CEU Qualifying Activity Categories is Self-Directed Learning, which has a maximum value of 15 CEUs per 3-year cycle. CEUs can be earned by participating in specified self-directed learning activities.
Self-directed learning is a process of learning that is directed and controlled by the learner. It involves personally designed research and/or study activities that are initiated and directed by the learner. The activities must meet a specified purpose, be relevant to business excellence as per the BEX® Guide and use knowledgeable resources.
Examples of qualifying self-directed learning activities include informal discussions or coaching sessions with co-workers, clients, or consultants, studying books, how-to manuals, internet resources, instructional resources, and archived webinars. As a general guide, one CEU is earned for each full hour of the activity.
To claim CEUs for self-directed learning activities, the recipient must document the activity, including the duration and content of the activity, and how it is relevant to business excellence as per the BEX® Guide. The documentation must be kept for 12 months after the three-year cycle has ended in case of audit.
It is important to note that not all self-directed learning activities qualify for CEUs. For example, reading a non-relevant business book or listening to a non-relevant podcast would not qualify. It is the responsibility of the recipient to ensure that their self-directed learning activities meet the requirements for CEUs.
Category 6: FORMAL ACADEMIC EDUCATION (Max. 30 CEUs)
Category 6, Formal Academic Education, allows recipients to earn a maximum of 30 CEUs by beginning and completing an academic course after earning the BEX® designation. This means that the academic course must have started after the recipient has passed the BEX® exam. In order to qualify, the academic course must be directly related to business excellence as per the BEX® Guide and must be offered for degree credit. Additionally, the recipient must receive a passing grade in the course.
In general, one academic course credit is earned for every three hours of class or contact time. Therefore, one academic course credit qualifies for one CEU, and a typical 15-credit academic course qualifies for 15 CEUs. However, the actual number of class or contact hours is equal to 45 hours.
It's important to note that the academic course must be completed during the recipient's three-year cycle, and documentation of the completed course must be maintained in the BEX® Development Log. It's the responsibility of the recipient to provide documentation, including transcripts or certificates of completion, to verify completion of the academic course.
By obtaining and maintaining their BEX® certification, recipients are expected to comply with the Terms and Conditions of the certification program, which includes the requirement to adhere to auditing terms. These terms state that all recipients may be subject to an audit at any time, which serves as a means of verifying that the recipient has met the requirements for recertification.
If selected for an audit, recipients will be notified via email and given 60 days to comply with the audit request terms. The audit process may take up to two months from start to finish, with a minimum of two weeks needed from the time the last piece of information is received by BEX®. In certain circumstances, the deadline may be extended at the discretion of the Certification Body.
During the audit process, the recipient's certification status will remain the same until the audit has been completed. Once all information has been received and analyzed by BEX®, the results of the audit will be communicated to the recipient via email. Recipients will only be allowed to recertify after successfully completing the audit and meeting all audit terms.
It is important to note that any documentation provided during the audit must clearly match the entries submitted for recertification. Failure to do so may result in delays in the audit process. Therefore, it is recommended that recipients keep accurate records and maintain copies of all relevant documentation to ensure that they are prepared for any potential audits.
The following table outlines the required audit documentation for each CEU category. Recipients are randomly selected for an audit, and documentation for CEU claims must be maintained for 12 months after the three-year cycle has ended.

7.0 AUDITS & AUDIT DOCUMENTATION
Additionally, it's important to note that a percentage of recipients will be randomly selected for audit and documentation for CEU claims must be maintained for 12 months after the three-year cycle has ended.
Recipients must comply with the auditing terms, including being subject to an audit at any time. They have 60 days from the date of the email to comply with the audit request terms. If necessary, this time may be extended at the discretion of the Certification Body. The audit process may take up to two months from start to finish, with a minimum of two weeks needed from the time the last piece of information is received by BEX®. After all information is received and analyzed, audit results will be communicated by email. During the audit, the recipient's certification status will remain in its current certification status until the audit is completed. Recipients can recertify only after successfully completing the audit and meeting all audit terms. Documents provided for the audit must match the entries submitted for recertification, or the process will be delayed.
7.0 AUDITS & AUDIT DOCUMENTATION
8.0 APPEAL PROCESS
The appeal process is available to a BEX® recipient if their recertification is denied for any reason. To initiate the appeal process, the recipient can send an email to certification@BEX®.org. The certification body will then review the appeal and make a binding decision within 90 days. During this process, the recipient may be contacted by BEX® for any further information or clarification required to validate the recertification information. Once a final decision has been made, it will be communicated to the individual by email.
It is important to note that the decision made by BEX® through the appeal process is final and binding. Recipients should ensure that they provide accurate and complete information during the recertification application process to minimize the likelihood of being denied recertification. In case of any doubt or confusion about the application process or the criteria for recertification, recipients are encouraged to contact BEX® for guidance and clarification before submitting their application.
9.0 RESPONSIBILITY TO THE PROFESSIONS
As a recipient of the BEX® designation, you have an obligation to the business excellence profession. This responsibility is further explained in the Code of Ethical Conduct and Professional Standards, which you must review and agree to online during the recertification process.
The Code of Ethical Conduct and Professional Standards outlines the expectations and obligations of individuals who hold the BEX® designation, which includes acting with honesty, integrity, and professionalism in all professional activities. The code also emphasizes the importance of maintaining confidentiality and avoiding conflicts of interest in your work. Additionally, recipients are expected to maintain and develop their knowledge and skills related to business excellence through ongoing professional development.
By agreeing to the Code of Ethical Conduct and Professional Standards, you acknowledge and accept these responsibilities and agree to uphold them throughout your career. These responsibilities reflect not only on you as an individual, but also on the BEX® community as a whole. By maintaining high standards of professionalism and ethical conduct, you contribute to the growth and development of the business excellence profession.
10.0 RETIRED CERTIFICATION STATUS
Recipients who are no longer earning income from practicing, teaching, or coaching in business excellence may choose to change their certification status from Certified to Certified (Retired). The process involves paying fees and understanding the implications of the change before proceeding. BEX® suggests that certification recipients should maintain their certification if they are not sure they will remain fully retired from the profession.
It is important to note that if a recipient chooses to retire their certification, they will no longer be required to earn CEUs towards recertification. However, it is advisable to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and developments in the field, as this can be beneficial if the recipient decides to return to the profession in the future.
It is important to consider the potential challenges of reactivating a BEX® certification if a recipient has been retired for an extended period and is not regularly pursuing Continuing Development Unit (CEU) hours. Recipients should contact info@bex.org to obtain information on how to apply for Retired Certification status.
